What is Primary Care?

Primary care is the first point of contact a person has with the health system.  It’s where individuals receive care for their everyday health needs. It’s the care provided by family physicians and by other health care professionals such as nurses, dietitians, mental health professionals, pharmacists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and others.  For example, an individual with a cardiac condition may not only see their family physician, but also a pharmacist for medication education, and an occupational therapist for assisting with lifestyle changes.
